E X - J U N C O S

Singer/guitarist Jill Rogers and drummer Andrew K. Lau arrived from very different backgrounds - Rogers as the singer with the highly regarded Bay Area honky-tonk band Crying Time, as well as vocalist for Orchestra Nostalgico, and her own little big band Imperial Jazz Co. Lau’s experience was in the post-punk and noise scene in Minneapolis with Zapruder's Slungshot and Fly Republic. In Ex-Juncos, those different backgrounds are burned away, leaving behind grounded, roomy melodies, static and noise, unusual percussion, occasional odd time signatures, and pointed words.

It’s the band’s ability to adapt and transform, however, that makes them truly unique. They easily abandon indie rock trappings and lean into abstraction and improvisation, creating sound sculptures with two guitars and assorted sound effects. This ability to move between traditional song structures and experimentation allows the band to play both traditional venues around the Bay Area, as well as being invited to participate in more outsider performance, such as the San Francisco’s SIMMS experimental music series. They adapt and transform. With no two shows alike, one never knows what to expect from Ex-Juncos. An unusual band for an unusual time.
On their first release, The Early Years, songs range from the anthemic Champion to the post punk pop of Lemons, from the epic ballad of love lost, Favorite Son, to the spacious and ethereal Waterline, with Rogers’ alternate-tuned guitar and enigmatic lyrics accompanied by Lau on metal pot lids. The band is currently a work on their second album, tentatively entitled The Blues.
